I'm confused by your criticism of Hagen and Bryant's reasoning about sexual selection and music. The main point there is that if the sexual selection account were true, then you shouldn't expect such a predominant same-sex attraction to music. This is actually an argument against a potential "just-so-story" rather than a new one. Also, this reason was one amongst many - all suggesting that the pure sexual selection account is incomplete. Where is the simplistic fallacy? Nobody is denying that many social factors play a proximate role in how people organize around musical activities, but if we are interested in ultimate functions of this complicated behavior, more integrative explanations are required - just what Hagen and Bryant were trying to do.

My question would be that, while I understand that in infancy 'dancing' might be useful while learning patterns in sound (perhaps like babbling) if it had no sustained purpose I would expect it to disappear over time. I read a paper by Irene Pepperberg and co. that put forth the hypothesis (after seeing which animals could entrain repetitive movements to a beat - eg. "dance") that only animals that have some capacity to use vocal communication entrain to music. Perhaps musical interest (and thus dancing) comes about when an animal becomes hyper-attentive to patterned sounds that might be carrying information.

I do not deny his right, nor anyone's, to express such an opinion. As I pointed out it's accompanyied by an excellent disclaimer of stating it's credability.

In light of the untestable nature of his opinion it seems mistaken to make such a prophetic statement. The mere addtion of "I'm optimistic [that the chances of life are 100%]" would have removed it from the field of sheer speculation.

...and here's me, commenting above paygrade - but hoping that there is life on the planet. It's exciting that people are looking at the problem, and that gives me reason to be optimistic that if life does exist, someone will find it.

I am flattered that you would quote me, however, that statement was made by the project's principle investigator Steve Vogt of the University of California at Santa Cruz. As he was the leader of the research team, he has every right to assert an opinion about his findings. This way the psychologists say be like a child while you are with them. This is because, if you are an adult you will not be thinking like the child will and so to get along with the child it would be a very good thing to behave like a child. This will have the child remove all the barriers and get along with you well.

I must say that's a very good piece of article to read, quite informative and written in the most simplest language, making it easier to understand. This is because generally these talks are quite above the level of the understandability of the normal humans, but this really was quite different.

Another interesting perspective on this subject of overcoming procrastination was put forward by Ian Ayres (Yale) in his book, "Carrots and Sticks." It's a discussion of the difference between reward-based motivations and social contracts / commitments as motivations.

Surely you mean decreases? Increases would seem to be very bad.

And if the health effects of smoking bothers you, my understanding was that they were principally from the actual smoking itself, and the benefits from the nicotine; so why not use nicotine patches or pills or other delivery mechanisms?

I personally would pay a considerable premium to avoid a 1/3 chance of death/disease (or whatever the lifetime risk of smoking was).
